Forest Floors

thedavecollection Impressive song writing and arrangements. Interesting variety across the album but without the songs ever being so disparate as to be disjointed as a collection. Absolutely well worth a listen. Favorite track: Like Dogs, Not Gods.

1.
I lost sight of the forest through the trees but on the drive you still strayed in my bones and now I fear that I'm a worn-out road. So break my jaw, then my mariner's mouth won't run anymore but my well sharpened tongue is the clumsy one that puts frames amongst my clothes and pictures in a drawer. They still cast shadows in the dark but the roots they all take haunt the length of my arm. Am I on time or just too late to find escape out of that grave? If you watch me out I'll hold your gaze. But I've tied knots into my spine that says I won't be climbing out on the red-eye. This view looks better from a passenger's window. You've been asleep so I guess you won't know. Rest your tired head and I'll burn the bridges to my bed, then all the ghosts will leave with the smoke.
2.
When I lay in bed dressed in my Sunday's best will I still get a Catholic funeral for my head? Because I've slept next to my doubts when the wick in me burnt out and when they played the hare I played the hound. So they say I should feel remorse for the crimes that I commit but I just feel for the ones I wish I did. Still, for someone without friends amongst fish you've got such loose hips. You say "If you pray then God will listen" but you don't sound sure of it. You see, I'm a boy of bad condition but your soul's ugly as sin. If hell's for those without contrition then we'll both be on the list. So let the spirit warm your veins. Hallelujahs couldn't save my name. Brothers and sisters, martyr or liar, we'll a fall down so you better land with grace. I've hail Mary's to last days. So if the mountains won't come to us then we should climb but if my demons were horses we'd both be able to ride. My lungs say we will be at it's feet when the cold ground meets our knees.

Pavement 04:19
I took the crosses from my hands and made the lines sit parallel. I turned our trees into coffin nails and placed my head up on a shelf. All the while the blues put me to sleep when my body wouldn't let me as I spent the month of February pulling at the seams. Still you reached into my mouth and wrapped your fingers around my tongue. I tried every word I knew but you managed to hang on. Somehow I'd become a gospel, the only book you'd ever read. I tied a noose around your neck but you just called it a lead. And so the pavement outside my house that was haunted by our ghost is now paved with skins, half-smoked, next to the bones that shed their clothes.

Lungs 03:15
I burnt down the woods just to prove I could but not a sound made it out the mouths of the crowd when I lit the match, smiled and stood back. All the smoke just distended their hollow chests. When the fire spread to the town they locked their houses and around their necks they hung their doubts. Like nervous lambs, they held their head in their hands and wore their fingers on their faces akin to a mask. Now there's a taste on my tongue that lingers in my throat and to my lungs. It dulls the ache in my brain but I still feel its roots in my veins.
5.
Reinvention 03:31
Wait, I swear I heard my name. I was sat at the window watching the English rain. But now I think it was an echo of when I crashed into the car park of a hotel. I was drunk. I must have burnt out but the smoke still lingers in my lungs. Perhaps the bones I broke will slow me down. I think I lost a friend but if the death of them means the start of the end then where does that leave us? They're all standing on my sternum waiting for the dust. And so I age by years in months these days. I have a stranger's face. But I came for reinvention so I robbed them for everything they had. Now my ribs creak like the floorboards of the house while yours are rooted deep beneath the soil in the ground.
6.
Thieves 02:45
You should know better by now to not settle down next to a volcano that you can't own without keeping your ears to the ground because I'll speak soft when conspiring to take the throne. It's hard to place soul in those that would sell you out for three pieces of gold. So who do you pray to when I leave the room? Didn't you get tired of your Mother's God or did he get tired of you? But if your back's to the choir then you should hold the crown with both hands because I would take it blind and make my way out through the crowd. So if I'm a thief then nail me up on wood above your mantelpiece but when the house gets quiet I'll know you're asleep and I'll be the ghost that walks the floors outside your door.
7.
Well you said you wanted fire but you're scared to spark the light. You said you wanted blood but your hands shake at the sight. Say I turn my back for just one minute would you show shame that my unborn son has more of a spine to stand up straight? Because when the river rose you fled to find a boat. I swim like a stone but I put up a fight. With a mouth like a smoking gun and bullets with your name on, I let my tongue run dry with the bitter taste from the bitter words that I called upon. So how do you fall asleep when an albatross is hanging down from your shoulders to the feet that's wearing out the ground? If it tightens up it's grip around your neck you're sure to drown while you're sweating out the sins you committed for the crown. So here we are between the Devil and the trees.

about

Recorded in July 2015.

"Forest Floor opens like a bull in a china shop, hitting everything in its path. Musically it has a lot going on, with a strong American influence which brings to mind +44 in places, and elements of shoe-gaze, electronica and in a non-conventional way, jazz. There’s something slightly unorthodox about the music, but its unpredictability and variety is fresh, exciting and enticing."
